Enlarged Male Breasts Are More Common Than You Realize

Posted February 22, 2018 in Gynecomastia

GYNECOMASTIA Patient by Dr. PatronellaSurgical correction of gynecomastia, or overdeveloped breast tissue in males, has become more and more common in recent years. According to a 2016 report by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, there was a 35 percent increase in the procedure between 2000 and 2015, and for the first time, men accounted for more than 40 percent of breast reduction surgeries in the United States.

Gynecomastia can result from different causes. Genetics, hormonal changes, obesity, and the use of certain drugs can all contribute to men developing excess breast tissue. The American Board of Cosmetic Surgery even estimates that up to 50 percent of men will experience the condition in their lifetime. Surgical options are available; however, some causes (such as the use of certain medications) should be ruled out prior to surgery in order to prevent a recurrence.

The surgical procedure can be fairly simple. If the breast tissue only contains excess fat, liposuction is used to remove it. A thin tube known as a cannula uses vacuum suction to remove the fat permanently. Dr. Patronella will place sutures to close the small incision.

However, in more severe cases of gynecomastia where the excess fat has caused the skin to sag, Dr. Patronella will remove the fat and any additional fatty tissue. Then, he will remove the excess skin. If necessary, he will also reduce the size of the areola.

Surgery to reduce the size of male breasts will result in a flatter, more masculine chest and can help you regain confidence in your appearance. Your results will be permanent as long as a healthy lifestyle is maintained. Major weight gain, use of steroids, and other medical conditions can cause a resurgence of enlarged breast tissue.
