Gynecomastia is the medical term for overdeveloped breasts in men. Approximately one-third of all male teenagers experience breast enlargement, but in 80% of these cases, the breasts return to a normal size in 3 years or less. Male athletes who use anabolic steroids to increase their muscle mass risk increasing the size of their breasts. Males may also notice gynecomastia when taking certain medications (including, but not limited to hair loss medications), hormone imbalances and/or with congenital disorders.
The breast is compromised of close to fifty percent fat. If you are a candidate for gynecomastia, Dr. Patronella will use small incisions and specialized cannulas to remove excess fat from the male breast and sculpt a more desirable shape. The procedure can be completed in less than two hours under local anesthesia. Patients can expect to return to work in three to four days following the procedure and will want to avoid intense exercise for two to three weeks.
