Breast reduction surgery is necessary for women whose breasts are large enough that their weight causes issues such as back pain, neck pain, skin irritation and difficulty breathing. Since this causes health problems surgery is considered correction for a medical condition, and it may be covered by some health insurance plans.

Breast reduction surgery removes fat, tissue and excess skin from the breasts, making them smaller, lighter and firmer, and also repositions the nipple in proportion to the new breast size. This surgery takes about 3 to 5 hours under general anesthesia. Recovery time is about 7 to 10 days. Most women can return to work in about two weeks, but should avoid lifting or strenuous exercise for three to four weeks following surgery.
