Beautiful Buttocks: Dr. P’s Proportionate Approach

I heard something in a patient consultation today for the first time: a woman who said she was tired of her butt looking “flat as a fritter.” It made me laugh and think about all the patients I see who are really apprehensive about having fat put into their buttocks for fear that they are going to end up with disproportionate buttocks—the “Kim Kardashian look.” And that’s just not what I do.
Oftentimes, for someone who’s lost weight and has sagging of the buttocks along with a loss of volume, it is a valuable tool to add fat to the buttocks to fill them out, make them round again and proportionate to the rest of the body. Creating a disproportionate buttocks appearance is not something I would ever want to do really. But having a procedure that can create a more balanced buttock to match with the rest of the body is an important adjunct in the body contouring procedures that I do.
Frequently, I’m doing a drainless tummy tuck along with the wrap-around 360-degree incision buttock lift (also called a lower body lift), which allows me to remove additional excess skin around the waist, hips, outer thighs, and buttocks to restore a firmer, lifted appearance to these regions. In my approach to buttock lift surgery, I take some of a patient’s own tissue and advance it down to fill out the upper buttock, and then I also use some fat grafting to fill out the lower buttock.
This provides a powerful way for me to create a proportionate buttock and an improved overall body contour for patients who have lost weight or are genetically predisposed to having flatness of the buttocks, which I think is something with which many women can identify.
These procedures are something that I do very frequently in this group of patients. I find it to be very rewarding because I’m able to really transform a body from one that causes a woman to feel uncomfortable putting on a swimsuit and going to the pool with her children to one in which she’s willing to wear a two-piece swimsuit because she feels very comfortable with the overall balance and proportion of their body and its appearance.
