The most commonly used method for achieving desired results through liposuction is the tumescent technique. With this technique, Dr. Patronella injects controlled amounts of a special fluid into the skin, which causes the fat to swell so it is easier to remove. The fluid used in the tumescent technique also reduces blood loss and opportunities for bruising to occur.
Pain medication in the fluid reduces the amount of discomfort experienced in the 18 to 24 hours following the procedure. A cannula also is used in this procedure for suction and fat removal purposes. Dr. Patronella moves the cannula back and forth to create thousands of tiny tunnels where the fat has been removed. After surgery, the patient is to wear a compression garment, or girdle, whose pressure against the skin causes the tiny tunnels collapse. The garment should be worn for approximately six weeks. The tissue continues to contract within the tunnel, creating a slimmer appearance.
