Plastic Surgery For Men

Patronella MD offers plastic surgery for men including waist contouring, abdominal etching, gynecomastia and hair replacement.

Waist Contouring

Men who wish to achieve a more athletic appearance can take advantage of new liposuction techniques that remove unwanted fat from the body using suction. Men who can pinch 3/4 inch of fat in the abdomen area may benefit from this procedure. Reducing body fat through liposuction can help men live a longer life, reduce lower back pain and begin more intense exercise programs. Liposuction is performed as an outpatient procedure under general anesthesia. Patients return to work in three to five days and can begin sports activities after three weeks.

Abdominal Etching

Abdominal etching defines the muscles that give men the “washboard” or “six pack” stomach. Liposculpture is the term for the procedure that creates subtle ripples in the abdominal area by accentuating the underlying abdominal muscles. Fat also is suctioned from specific areas through a small hollow tube inserted through one or more tiny incisions. The incisions are hidden in the natural creases of the body and leave very small scars.

A typical male waist that is 36-40 inches around can be safely reduced to 28-32 inches with this procedure. However; this procedure is not a substitute for a weight loss program. The ideal candidates are those who are not extremely overweight, but just have isolated pockets of fat within the waist and abdomen.

Gynecomastia (Overdeveloped Male Breasts)

Gynecomastia is the medical term for overdeveloped breasts in men. Approximately one-third of all male teenagers experience breast enlargement, but in eighty percent of these cases, the breasts return to a normal size is threes years or less. Male athletes who use anabolic steroids to increase their muscle mass risk increasing the size of their breasts (other changes in personality, such as aggressive behavior, also may occur).

The breast is compromised of close to fifty percent fat. If you are a candidate for gynecomastia, Dr. Patronella will use small incisions and specialized cannulas to remove excess fat from the male breast and sculpt a more desirable shape. The procedure can be completed in less than two hours under local anesthesia. Patients can expect to return to work in three to four days following the procedure and will want to avoid intense exercise for two to three weeks.

Hair Replacement

Hair loss is mostly caused by a combination of hormones, aging and family history. While shampoos and solutions exist that are applied directly to the scalp to help treat baldness, they do not provide dramatic results in restoring hair.
Hair replacement has proven to be successful in treating male pattern baldness. This replacement procedure uses existing hair from the back and sides of the head, and mini-grafts and micro grafts are most commonly used to fill in thinning areas.

Ideal candidates for hair replacement have dense hair growth at the back and sides of the head. To begin the process, a small strip of hair is removed (usually from the back of the head) and then each hair follicle is dissected using magnification. Single, double and triple hair grafts are then placed several millimeters from each other throughout the balding area. Mega sessions, which utilize more than 1,000 grafts may be necessary in some cases. A scalp reduction allows for more dramatic results by surgically reducing the balding area.

Hair replacement procedures may be completed under either local or general anesthesia. Hair texture, color and even amount of curliness may affect the final result. Most patients can return to work after a few days and resume their normal activities after a month.
