Age Spots

Age spots that appear on the face and hands result from aging and overexposure to the sun and the environment. Ninety percent of face aging is caused by sun damage and only ten percent occurs as a result of genetics.

With laser technology, lasers are used to resurface the skin, which in turn results in the growth of new skin cells and produces a smoother, tighter and more youthful appearance.

Recovery from laser surgery takes about three to five days, depending on the type of surgery and depth of the peel. After about two weeks, patients are able to wear makeup again and resume most normal activities.

Laser Skin Resurfacing

Laser skin resurfacing is a safe and effective way to reduce fine lines and wrinkles on the skin without the risk of surgery. Because of the precise ability of the laser, Dr. Patronella is able to control the depth of the treatment and target specific areas of the skin to in turn reveal new layers of skin. As part of the healing process after laser skin resurfacing, new collagen is produced that results in tighter, smoother and younger-looking skin.  

Scar Improvements

Dr. Patronella is skilled in several procedures to improve the appearance of scars, including surgically realigning the scar along natural lines, narrowing the scar, or flattening the scar. The use of ultra-pulse laser technology safely improves the appearance of some scars, usually after a few sessions, and in most cases, without the use of anesthesia. Dr. Patronella also may recommend Dermabrasion, which is a procedure which lightly sands the skin to smooth out imperfections.

Birthmarks and Tattoos

Laser technology is successful in treating and removing birthmarks (including port wine stains), tattoos and others types of pigmented lesions. The lasers work by destroying vascular malformations in the skin through the use of selective absorption, allowing for minimal discomfort to the patient. However, more than one treatment may be needed to reduce or eliminate the discoloration associated with the birthmark, tattoo or lesion. Dr. Patronella will determine the number of treatments during your consultation with him.

Following laser treatments, most patients are able to immediately return to normal activities. Only trained physicians who understand the effects of improper exposure to the lasers should perform laser treatments.

Hair Reduction

Although there is not a method of hair removal that is completely permanent, laser technology (unlike electrolysis in which each hair follicle is treated with a needle) scans each area of skin to be treated and uses a cooling gel to protect your skin. The hairs that are being treated with lasers should be at least stubble length for satisfied results.

The amount and length of treatments depends on factors such as hair and skin color; recent tanning or sunburn; use of certain medications and which area is being treated. You may experience temporary reddening in the treated area after the laser procedure, but most patients' normal activities are not interrupted. Dr. Patronella advises that you avoid sun exposure for a few days after treatment to avoid hyperpigmentation of the treated areas.
