The Breast Reduction Procedure
In a breast reduction procedure, Dr. Patronella will use techniques to both reduce and lift the breasts. Selection of the appropriate techniques is determined by factors that include breast size, shape, and laxity. In one of the most commonly used techniques, known as the "inverted T pattern," "anchor" or "keyhole," incisions are made around the areola, in a vertical line down the lower breast portion, and horizontally along the breast crease.
The breasts are reshaped through the removal of excess fat, glandular tissue, and skin. The size of the areolas may be reduced as well. The nipple and areola will then be lifted to a position that is proportionate to the breasts' new shape. Breast reduction is performed under general anesthesia in three to five hours.
Breast Reduction Recovery
Following your breast reduction procedure, Dr. Patronella may recommend you stay overnight in one our private post operative recovery suites. All overnight patients are carefully monitored by our caring, well-trained staff of registered nurses so you receive personalized care.
As part of our exclusive home health care program, we offer a private visit to the home by a certified medical professional. This service is provided to our patients who are recovering in the Houston area. During this visit, our healthcare professional will monitor your recovery, help change your dressings, assist you with your medication, and provide updates regarding your recovery to Dr. Patronella.
The recovery time for breast reduction surgery is approximately 7-10 days, and most women can return to work in about two weeks. Lifting and strenuous exercise should be avoided for three to four weeks following surgery to avoid increased swelling and bleeding. Any surgical drains will be removed in one to two weeks, and stitches are generally removed over a three week period.
