Breast Implant Information

When a woman chooses to enhance the size and shape of her breasts through a breast augmentation or reconstructive procedure, she has a choice between saline-filled or silicone gel-filled implants.
 
Both have an outer shell made of solid silicone, but saline implants are filled with sterile salt water, while silicone implants are filled with a semi-solid silicone gel.  Because the silicone gel has a similar texture to breast tissue, many women and surgeons feel it gives breasts a more natural look and feel than saline implants.  
 
Some individuals prefer the saline implant because any potential leaking is soon apparent due to the implant’s deflation.  Silicone leaks are not easily detected because they tend to occur slowly.  
 
As of this date, many scientific studies have verified the safety of silicone implants for breast procedures, including a report issued by the Institute of Medicine in 1999, which concluded that no link could be established to link silicone implants with serious health conditions such as autoimmune disorders and cancer.
