What are the advantages of silicone vs. saline implants?
When enhancing the size of her breasts, a woman has a choice between saline or silicone-gel filled implants.  Both have various advantages and disadvantages.  Many women and surgeons feel that silicone-gel filled implants give the breasts a more natural look and feel because the silicone gel is similar in texture to breast tissue.  Because all implants carry the potential risk of leaking, that is another factor that must be considered when choosing an implant type.  Saline leaks are easily detected because the implant collapses, and the saline is naturally expelled from the body.  Silicone leaks, however, tend to go unnoticed because the gel usually leaks more slowly.  An MRI exam is recommended to determine if any leaking has occurred in silicone implants.  A slightly larger incision may be required to place a silicone implant in the body because they are prefilled with silicone gel, whereas saline implants are filled with sterile salt water after they have been placed inside the body.  Other factors influence the choice of implant, including a woman’s physical frame.  Dr. Patronella will take these and other factors into consideration when making his recommendations to you.

 

Are silicone implants safe?
As of this date, numerous studies, including a report issued by the Institute of Medicine in 1999, have concluded that no convincing evidence exists to link silicone implants with cancer and connective tissue diseases.

 

How do I determine the right implant size to achieve my goals?
Dr. Patronella will make a recommendation to you based upon your image goals and your unique frame and physical measurements..  During your consultation, you will try on different size implants with a bra designed to hold them in place in order to help you choose your size preference.

 

How soon after surgery can I return to work and my exercise routine?
Most breast augmentation patients can resume their work schedule 5-6 days after their surgery, and return to exercising one month later.  The recovery period is similar for breast lift patients, who typically can return to work in 4-5 days, and resume exercising in a month. Breast reduction patients can usually return to work in two weeks and begin exercising again in one month.
