Breast Augmentation Procedure

In a breast augmentation procedure, an incision approximately one-inch in length is made, most commonly, in the crease of the breast. After forming a pocket for the implant, the implant is positioned behind the pectoral muscle. Silicone implants are placed pre-filled behind the muscle, while saline implants are filled to the desired size with sterile salt water after they have been placed within the breast.

To enhance the breasts contour, Dr. Patronella makes internal sutures which give the breast crease greater definition. The incisions are then closed with sutures. Breast augmentation is performed in 1-2 hours as an outpatient procedure.

Saline vs. Silicone Implants

Saline and Silicone implants both have corresponding advantages and disadvantages. Many women and surgeons prefer silicone-filled implants because of the natural look and feel that is similar to breast tissue. For women who have a thin build, they are less likely to produce the appearance of rippling.

Saline implants are filled with sterile salt water. Because they are filled after insertion inside the breast, they may require a slightly smaller incision. Some women prefer these implants because any ruptures that might possibly occur are easily detectable because the implant deflates. Any potential silicone implant leaks are more subtle and less readily detectable because the gel typically leaks more slowly.

Breast Augmentation Recovery

Your breasts will most likely be sore for 3-5 days after surgery, but you will be given a prescription for pain medication to help you recover more comfortably. As part of our exclusive home health care program, we offer a private visit to the home by a certified medical professional. During this visit, our healthcare professional will monitor your recovery, help change your dressings, assist you with your medication, and provide updates regarding your recovery to Dr. Patronella.

Most women are able to return to work in one week, and resume exercise in one month. You will be instructed to wear a support bra for two weeks, and a member of Dr. Patronella's patient care team will teach you how to perform a daily implant displacement exercise to maintain a long-term, soft and natural breast augmentation.
